Improving control of age-related obesity

Image

Credit score: Delphine Duteil The operate and distribution of adipose tissue within the physique change in the course of the course of life. Beige fats cells, a particular sort of adipocytes, have the potential to make use of power reserves -- fatty deposits -- by producing warmth in a course of generally known as thermogenesis. With rising age, beige adipocytes tackle the morphology of white adipocytes. Thermogenic exercise ceases and with it the cells' potential to burn fats. In consequence, the danger of weight problems will increase. A group working with Freiburg researchers Prof. Dr. Roland Schüle and Dr. Delphine Duteil has now confirmed that the epigenetic enzyme lysine particular demethylase 1 (Lsd1) performs a key function on this transformation. They're presenting their leads to the science journal "Proceedings of ...

Exosomes derived from very obese patients' fat send wrong signals throughout body

A research team led by Robert J. Freishtat, M.D., M.P.H., chief of emergency medicine at Children's National Health System, is exploring possible links between extra belly fat and obesity-related diseases, such as atherosclerosis, buildup of plaque in arteries that can harden and restrict blood flow. More precise knowledge of the mechanisms by which obesity ratchets up heart risks holds the promise of helping the next generation of kids avoid experiencing chronic disease. The working theory is that exosomes derived from belly fat from obese patients carry a distinct ability to accelerate biological processes that lead to atherosclerosis. Dr. Freishtat will present preliminary findings from a study involving 10 patients during the 2017 annual meeting of the Pediatric Academic Societies. The research team isolated exosomes from five obese teenagers and compared them with five sex-matched lean adolescents. Turns out exosomes derived from fat pick up their marching orders from m...

Your muscles can 'taste' sugar

Now researchers at the University of Michigan Life Sciences Institute have uncovered an unexpected mechanism of glucose sensing in skeletal muscles that contributes to the body's overall regulation of blood sugar levels. "We found that skeletal muscle cells have machinery to directly sense glucose -- in a certain sense it's like the muscles can taste sugar, too," said senior study author Jiandie Lin, a faculty member at the LSI, where his lab is located. This ability of muscles to sense blood glucose is a separate and parallel process that augments the insulin-driven response. Together they work as a rheostat to maintain steady glucose levels in the body, particularly after a meal, according to findings scheduled to be published May 4 in  Molecular Cell . Continuing to develop this in-depth understanding of how the body self-regulates blood sugar at the molecular level could shed new light on obesity and diabetes, as well as point toward new therapeutic targe...

Cinnamon may lessen damage of high-fat diet in rats

In the study, researchers fed rats cinnamon supplements for 12 weeks along with a high-fat diet. They found: The rats weighed less and had less belly fat and healthier levels of sugar, insulin and fat in their blood, compared to rats that did not receive cinnamon with their high-fat foods; Rats fed cinnamon also had fewer molecules involved in the body's fat-storing process and more antioxidant and anti-inflammatory molecules that protect the body from the damages of stress. The results suggest that cinnamon may reduce the effects of a high-fat diet, researchers said. for more information visit our product website:   Buy Suhagra 100 mg Online

New findings may explain the advantages of polyunsaturated fat

The so-called "muffin study" received a lot of attention when it was published in 2014. In this study, the participants had eaten three muffins a day, on average, for a period of seven weeks. Half of the muffins had been baked using saturated fat (palm oil) and the other half using polyunsaturated fat (sunflower oil). The carbohydrate and protein content was the same in each muffin, the only difference between them was the type of fat. In a collaboration with the person in charge of the major muffin study, associate professor Ulf Risérus at Uppsala University in Sweden, professor Charlotte Ling at Lund University, Sweden, has now studied the epigenetic changes in the study participants' fat tissue, through biopsies taken before and after the project. The results show that the epigenetic pattern in more than 3,000 genes (out of approximately 25,000 that exists in a human being) had changed differentially, depending on whether the participants had eaten saturated fat o...

Garden-enhanced intervention improved BMI, nutrition knowledge of California students

The Shaping Healthy Choices Program (SHCP) was implemented in four schools in two California districts, with 179 fourth grade students (aged 9-10 years) serving as controls and 230 as part of the intervention group. During the program, which extended over one academic year, students engaged in classroom nutrition education enhanced by gardens established at the schools, harvested vegetables for cooking demonstrations, and shared the harvest with their families. In addition, newsletters corresponding to lessons were sent home, health fairs were held at school, salad bars were installed in schools, and school wellness committees were established. As a result of SCHP implementation, students participating in the intervention demonstrated significant improvements in nutrition knowledge and vegetable identification compared to control students. However, vegetable preference and fruit and vegetable intake did not improve, nor did general or dietary parenting practices significantly c...

Diet rich in fruit, vegetables and whole grains may lower risk of gout

Gout is a joint disease which causes extreme pain and swelling. It is most common in men aged 40 and older and is caused by excess uric acid in the blood (known as hyperuricaemia) which leads to uric acid crystals collecting around the joints. The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet reduces blood pressure and is recommended to prevent heart disease. It has also been found to lower uric aci d levels in the blood. Therefore, the DASH diet may lower the risk of gout. To investigate this further, a team of US and Canada based researchers examined the relationship between the DASH and Western dietary patterns and the risk of gout. They analysed data on over 44,000 men aged 40 to 75 years with no history of gout who completed detailed food questionnaires in 1986 that was updated every four years through to 2012. Each participant was assigned a DASH score (reflecting high intake of fruits, vegetables, nuts and legumes, such as peas, beans and lentils, low-fat dai...
